Vince Ray has forged a fabulous career that has combined his twin loves of artwork and music. Ever since he was a kid, the love of one has fed off the other to create what he cheerfully calls a twoheaded monster. Now, Hastingsbased Vince has given his music a new twist as he issues a new album, Back In The Shack, after recording for the first time as a One Man Bandit going it alone to explore his enduring love of early electric blues while accompanying his syncopated guitar rhythms himself on bass drum and maraca pedal. Its a matter of working backwards, he says. I started playing the guitar in the mid1970s and worked my way back through rock music, the British blues boom, rock and roll, rockabilly and to the early blues of Chicago and the Mississippi Delta. There are many names along the way, picking up influences from Dr Ross, Joe Hill Louis, Duster Bennett and, of course, John Lee Hooker. Mr Hookers slow steady relentless foot tapping was the basis for my rhythmic idea, extending the concept into a bass drum plus shaker. Now, alongside gigs as the One Man Bandit electric nights of blues music backed by magic tricks Vince Ray is proud to release an album mixing original material with selected covers. Its release will be accompanied by a book of his own illustrations based on the lyrics. Conquest Records will be further supporting Back In The Shack with collectable pieces of art in the form of instantlyrecogniseable Vince Ray artwork, lithographic prints and stickers.
